Organ transplartation and immunity

Abstract
The idea of replacing disabled organs or tissues with healthy ones appears to have been a dream of mankind since ancient time. However, only during the past half century have the control of bacterial infection and perfection of surgical techniques made it possible to transplant almost any organ or tissues of the body, if the problem of formidable histocompatability barrier and the application of effective immunosuppresive method could be solved. At that time, as the one of the most successful and widely employed therapeutic allografts there was the blood transfusion by Karl Landstem in 1901.
During the past 15 years, a great deal of advancement has been made in the direction and now replacement of disabled organs, for example, kidney, heart, liver, lung, bone marrow, pancrease, are not only a dream but rather an acceptation of kidney transplantation as a choice of treatment of uncontrolable chronic renal failure, and the liver, lung bone marrow, pancreas, transplantation are yet in experimental state.
In transplantation of living cells, tissue, and organs for experimental, or therapeutical purposes have two inherent major problems.
1) Preservation of living organs or tissues until it is transplanted.
2) Graft rejection by the recipient.
The writer has reviewed the above two major problems, and mentioned about experimental studies of above problems.
